How to undo a sent email in Gmail

Gmail's "Undo Send" doesn't recall a message after it's arrived. It delays sending by a few seconds after you click Send, so there's a short window to catch a mistake before the email actually leaves. Once that window closes, the email is gone β€” there's no way to unsend it. This guide covers the desktop browser version.

What you'll need: A Gmail account. A desktop or laptop browser β€” Chrome, Firefox, Safari, or Edge.

1

Send an email as normal

Write your message and click Send, the same as always. Gmail doesn't ask you to confirm β€” it starts the undo countdown the moment you click.

2

Look for the confirmation banner

A dark banner appears at the bottom-left of the screen reading Message sent, with Undo and View message links next to it. It stays on screen for a few seconds only.

3

Click Undo before the banner disappears

Click Undo while the banner is still visible. There's no second chance once it fades β€” the email has already gone out.

4

Edit or discard the reopened draft

Gmail reopens the message as an editable compose window. It was never delivered, so make your changes and send it again, or close the window to discard it entirely.

5

Open Settings to give yourself more time

Five seconds isn't long. Click the gear icon (βš™οΈ) near the top-right of the screen, then click See all settings.

6

Find the Undo Send section

Stay on the General tab β€” it opens by default. Scroll down to Undo Send, near the top of the list.

7

Choose a longer cancellation period

Click the dropdown next to Send cancellation period and pick 10, 20, or 30 seconds. Thirty is the longest Gmail allows.

8

Save the change

Scroll to the bottom of the page and click Save Changes. Every email you send from now on gets the longer window.

Variations

Undoing a send from the Gmail mobile app

The same short window applies on iOS and Android. After sending, a banner reading Sending… or Message sent appears near the bottom of the screen with an Undo option β€” tap it before it disappears. The cancellation period you set on desktop applies to the app too, since it's an account-wide setting, not a per-device one.

The email has already been delivered

Once the undo window passes, Gmail has actually sent the message β€” there's no setting or trick that recalls it from the recipient's inbox afterwards. If the mistake matters, the only real option is a prompt follow-up email explaining the error, or asking the recipient directly to delete it.

Troubleshooting

I don't see the Undo banner at all

It only appears for the length of your cancellation period, then disappears on its own β€” if you looked away, you likely missed it rather than it failing to show. Check the current setting under Settings β†’ General β†’ Undo Send and increase it if five seconds isn't enough.

I clicked Undo but the email still shows as sent

Check the Sent folder. If the message is there, the undo window had already closed by the time you clicked β€” Gmail sent it before the click registered. Reopen it from Sent and, if the mistake is serious, send a correction as a separate follow-up.

Can I set the cancellation period longer than 30 seconds?

No. Thirty seconds is the maximum Gmail offers. There's no workaround or hidden setting for a longer delay.
